Brian Thompson Shooting Suspect, 26, Was High School Valedictorian Who Graduated with Honors from Ivy League School

The man police suspect of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was class valedictorian at a prestigious Maryland prep school and graduated with honors from an Ivy League school.

Luigi Mangione, 26, graduated from the private Gilman School in Baltimore in 2016 as the class valedictorian, PEOPLE confirms. The all-boys school lists tuition charges for high school as $37,690 annually.

He went on to study computer science and mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in engineering, with honors, at the same time in 2020, the university confirmed to PEOPLE.

Police believe Mangione is the gunman responsible for killing Thompson in Midtown Manhattan on Dec. 4. He was spotted by an employee at an Altoona, Pa., McDonalds and allegedly discovered carrying a 9mm “ghost” gun and suppressor, which resembled the weapon used to kill Thompson. Police in Altoona arrested him on weapons charges.

Mangione was also found carrying several fake IDs, including one used to check into a Manhattan hostel, and what police described as a “manifesto” detailing his critiques of the American healthcare industry.

Investigators from the NYPD and Manhattan District Attorney’s office were heading to Altoona on Monday afternoon to interview Mangione, said Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.

At Penn, Mangione took classes on advanced algorithms, artificial intelligence, computational linguistics and machine learning, among others, per his LinkedIn. He also reported being the founder of Penn’s first video game development club, UPGRADE.

Before graduating, Mangione headed to California where he was a counselor at Stanford University’s pre-collegiate studies program over the summer of 2019, Stanford confirmed to PEOPLE. He reported teaching the tenets of artificial intelligence to gifted students on his LinkedIn.

The Maryland native listed his job as a data engineer at automotive listing site TrueCar on LinkedIn, working out of Santa Monica, Calif.; a spokesperson for the company said he hadn’t worked there since 2023. His last known residence before the shooting was in Honolulu, Hawaii, police said.
