The map below shows the maritime boundaries of the Gulf but generally speaking it extends from the tip of Texas and over to just below the Florida keys. The U.S. Government controls the airspace above and the mineral rights below similar to other countries. With about a third to half of the entire Gulf under U.S. control, the rub is the U.S. pays for almost all the economic and environmental costs to maintain the entire Gulf. In that scenario, we are getting ripped off. If we pay all the cost, why not rename it?
It’s also a vital part of our U.S. economy with 40% of all domestic seafood coming from the Gulf and 15% of oil and gas.
Yes, other countries won’t be bound to adopt the new name but typically once the USA makes a change, the world follows and Mexico is certainly heavily dependent on our U.S. economy.
But, people are certainly entitled to their opinion on whether they like the name change or not. Personally, I love the name change and by the looks of it, most people do too. That’s what makes America great.
