Ski jumping in the Planica World Championships is coming to an end, check the results. Today (Friday 3 March) the penultimate competition – men on the big hill – took place. It brought the Poles David Kubacki the bronze medal, the winner was Timi Zajc.
The pre-competition test series as well as Thursday’s qualifiers boosted the mood among Polish fans. The second result was achieved by Dawid Kubacki, the third was Kamil Stoch (both behind Stefan Kraft). Piotr Żyła saved himself – 16, Aleksander Zniszczol was 22.
In the first series of competitions, our players were also in the lead, but they were not in such a good mood. Although of course they still counted on the fight for medals.
The championship competition was somewhat spoiled by the wind. The best on the list jumped in difficult conditions, did not reach such distances as rivals who started even a moment earlier, and point compensation did not balance these losses.
“Lost”, including Stefan Kraft (only 11th), favorite among the hosts Anze Lanisek (14th). Żyła, who was in 9th place, probably expected more, but with a big loss (10.1 points) to the podium. And it was difficult to count on such an attack as from the normal hill (from 13th to 1st position).
Some took advantage of the good conditions. Timi Zajc showed great power. The Slovenian gave up the test jump today and in the first round he flew from the starting pole lowered at the request of the trainer (additional points for exceeding 131 m in this case) to a whopping 137.5 m! However, he did not enjoy the leading position for long, soon he was beaten by Ryoyu Kobayashi by 0.7 points. Nevertheless, these two had the best results at the halfway point today. Third place was occupied by Halvor Egner Granerud (3 points behind the leader).
Of the Poles, Kubacki was the most important in the fight for medals, who, like the Norwegian, did not have a favorable wind (129 m), finished 4th, 2.9 points behind the podium and 5.9 behind Kobayashi.
The 6th Stoch (he was leading for a while) also had a chance for a medal, missing 5 points from such success. The aforementioned Żyła was 9th and Aleksander Zniszczol executed the minimum plan, qualifying for the second series today.
So the second series had its favourites, but in Planica we have already seen that a lot can change.
Among the Poles, Zniszczol was the first to jump, but in the end he had a slightly worse result, falling with “one eye” to 23rd position. But overall he can be satisfied with this performance and his fine form bodes well ahead of Saturday’s team competition, where the Poles will be fighting for medals, even gold.
She lived in the second series today “didn’t go crazy” like a week ago on a normal hill. He retained 9th place.
Sixth at halfway, Stoch in the second jump, very good (136.5 m), even improved his position. Kubacki (133.5 m) was also satisfied after the landing, which then took the lead, and only three rivals remained on top. After a while, Granerud jumped worse (he dropped to 7th place) and it became clear that Kubacki would be on the podium!
Zajc did his job, he landed far behind the green line, he was ahead of Kubacki. So only Kobayashi was left. The Japanese probably couldn’t handle the pressure, and that meant that Zajc won. For a moment it was possible to count that the leader would even be behind Stoch (and that would give us another medal), but in the end he had the second result. Kubacki was only 0.6 points ahead, Stoch was 4th.
