Sony has the rights to over 900 Marvel superheroes in its portfolio, one of the most important of which is, of course, Spider-Man. In recent years, Peter Parker has often appeared in various types of productions, which of course also include video games.
In 2018, Marvel’s Spider-Man was released on PlayStation 4 and lived up to the expectations of gamers who have been waiting for a worthy Spider-Man game for many years. Insomniac Games rose to the occasion and… delivered a title clearly inspired by Rocksteady Game’s Batman: Arkham series. Marvel’s Spider-Man was characterized by the excellent mechanics of moving (swinging) using a spider’s web. The game was later remastered for the PlayStation 5, and in 2022 it was also released on PC.
Two years after the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man, a standalone DLC was released – Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The game was a demonstration of the capabilities of the new console released at the time – PS5. But it’s also out on PS4. In Peter Parker’s temporary absence, New York was taken over by the titular Miles Morales. The newly minted superhero had to undergo a baptism of fire and solve the intrigue while saving his district – Harlem.
On the other hand, gamers are already rubbing their hands, because in the fall a full-fledged sequel will be released – Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, only on PS5. This should be a strong contender for the title of the best game of 2023.
The Spider-Man Noir character first appeared in comics in 2009 as part of the Marvel Noir universe. In short, it is Spider-Man living in New York in the 1930s, the time of the Great Depression in the United States. He’s been bitten by a spider hidden in a stolen artifact, which causes him to have visions… of a spider god that gives him superpowers.
Spider-Man Noir has already made guest appearances in the animated series “Mega Spider-Man” (2012-2017) and the Oscar-winning animation of 2018 – “Spider-Man: Into the Verse”. The characters in these productions were voiced by Milo Ventimiglia and Nicolas Cage respectively.
As Variety found out and then confirmed by the US branch of IGN, a live-action series starring Spider-Man Noir is currently in development. He’s an aging superhero and obviously doesn’t want to be Peter Parker living in another time. Amazon Prime Video (the series will be available to watch there) and MGM+ are responsible for the production, having “leased” the rights to the characters from Sony.
Oren Uziel (known from “The Lost City”, “Cloverfield Paradox” and the new “Mortal Kombat”) will write and executive produce the Spider-Man Noir series. He will work alongside Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), and former Sony executive Amy Pascal will serve as executive producer.
It is worth noting that the sequel to the sensational “Spider-Man: Into the Universe”, titled “Spider-Man: Through the Multiverse”, will premiere on May 31. We’re crossing our fingers that Spider-Man Noir follows in these footsteps, and not Sony’s recent mediocre productions on the big screen, i.e. “Venoma 2: Carnage” with Tom Hardy and “Morbius” with Jared Leto.
