Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday that he was “grateful” for Kiev’s new US arms package after talks with US President Joe Biden.

“The United States has announced a new strengthening of our defense, a new $ 1 billion support package,” Zelensky said in an evening address. “I am grateful for this support, it is especially important for our defense in the (eastern part) of Donbas.”

Earlier Wednesday, Biden announced a $ 1 billion package of weapons to Ukraine, including more artillery, coastal anti-ship defense systems, artillery ammunition and advanced missile systems that Ukraine already uses.

“I am also grateful for the leadership (of the United States) in mobilizing the assistance of all partners,” the Ukrainian leader said.

He said he also discussed with the US president “the tactical situation on the battlefield and how to speed up our victory”.

Kyiv is pushing for more Western weapons to help it counter the Russian invasion, with its army overpowered by Moscow forces.

“Every day I fight for Ukraine to get the necessary weapons and equipment,” Zelensky said.

“But courage, wisdom and tactical skills cannot be introduced. And that is what our heroes have.”

Zelensky said he also had a phone conversation with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The British leader said on Twitter that London supported Kyiv “until its final victory”.

“The @ G7 and @ NATO meetings later this month will be an opportunity to demonstrate the unity of the West and the determination to support Ukraine in the long run,” Johnson said.
